Giving Thanks
Thursday, November 26th, 2009 Every year Thanksgiving takes on greater meaning; as one grows older his or her view of the world changes, “things” becomes less important and the true “finer things in life” become more apparent. Family, friends, love.
I think it has a lot to do with the growing awareness that develops as we age, of our own mortality, and that of those we love. Giving thanks becomes less about what we think we should have and more about realizing the value of what we do have.
Of course recognizing the purpose of this blog, I have to aknowledge that I am looking for a more secure future, and that security must by needs be based on physical possessions, money and wealth. But that is not who I am, and I suspect , who you are either. Without getting into personal tradegies or politics, we all have reasons to forge ahead and make our future more secure, and I and this site are dedicated to doing everything in my power to make that security possible for myself and as many others as I can.
The holiday season in the US always brings Christmas music to the airwaves, and inevitably I will hear John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War is Over)”, and just as inevetiably it will stir an emotional reaction in me. I think the essential message of this song, boiled all the way down is this: It is about individual action.
”War is Over, If you want it.” Sentiment is easy, action is hard. Anyone who knows me knows my affinity for John Lennon, his life and music. He takes me back to the unbridled optimism of my youth, and a belief in the the essential goodness of the human spirit. I still believe in that essential goodness, but I know that in the end, it comes down to the actions an individual takes to shape his own future, and thereby the future of those around him.
War is over, if you want it; Security is yours, if you want it. Take action to make your life better, and may each succeeding Thanksgiving from now forward find you and yours with more to be thankful for than you have today!
